- Moved to Oahu, HI from Arizona to continue with 2nd year of medical school
- Separated when ex-wife suddenly and without warning moved from our residence on Oahu and unjustifiably took our young children with her to Hilo, HI on the Big Island. The police were called at that time as I felt the children were being kidnapped. The police said, however, that because we were married and no custody orders were in place at the time, that there was nothing they could do to stop her (we had "equal rights" to the kids). She and the children have remained there to this day.

- After a few months of failed attempts at reconciliation between Oahu and the Big Island, and multiple visits by me to see the children in Hilo, my ex-wife and I had an in-depth discussion in Hilo about the ongoing situation. After expressing my frustrations with trying to parent the children in an environment outside of my own home, I suggested that I would like the children to visit me on Oahu for a time. She responded by filing a surprise restraining order against me, falsely claiming instances of domestic violence, which enabled her to obtain temporary physical and legal custody of the children and ordered my to stay away from them and their residence.

- Ex-wife files for divorce, asserting that she should be awarded full physical and legal custody, that she should have no liability for any of our shared marital debts (including those incurred as living expenses while I was in medical school), and that I should be responsible for 75% of the costs of airfare travel when having the children stay with me on Oahu. I refused to agree with these unfair terms, which initiated a contested divorce proceeding.
March 2009-May 2011
- Full duration of a very long, grueling contested divorce process, trial, rulings, and finalization of proceedings. Despite my best efforts to defend myself at trial (without legal representation, could not afford it) and contest my ex-wife's claims regarding custody, she was awarded full physical and legal custody by the court due to her having a more stable income and residential dwelling at the time. Owing to the children being in school by this time and the separate island living situation, sparse visitation was granted to me according to major school breaks (spring, summer, fall, and rotating Christmas breaks), which amounts to approximately just 10 weeks per year. Thankfully we were ordered to share equally in the marital debts and the costs of interisland travel for the children, but to this day she has not contributed one cent to the debts and has only sporadically shouldered her half of the travel costs.
